Difference Between Flag Hoisting & Flag Unfurling |
In this article I am going to discuss about the difference between hoisting flag & unfurling flag. Even from childhood we go to school and participate in unfurling flag event on the occasion of independence day and republic day. We usually say unfurling flag in both the events, but sometimes we also refer hoisting flag. So there is a minor difference in between hoisting flag and unfurling flag and these events/terms have historical values. So before we directly distinguish between the flag hoisting in flag unfurling, I would like to throw light on some historical moments of Indian history.
Present look of Indian Flag - The flag has three stripes. On the top it has deep saffron color, middle one is white color and the bottom most is green color. There is 24-spoked blue wheel/Ashok Chakra on white stripe.
What these stripes represent - The saffron color represents courage & sacrifices, white represents peace & truth and the green represents chivalry & faith.
Adoption of Indian Flag - It was firstly hoisted on 22nd July, 1947 officially but previously but the then design was adopted in 1931 in congress meeting. After partition of Pakistan the flag was hoisted on 15th August 1947 replacing the snipping wheels.
History of Indian flag - With time India needed a national flag with distinctive symbol that could represent the national objective. In 1921 a student Pingali Venkayya represented a design of national flag to M.K. Gandhi. The flag was in two stripe colors. Top one was in red color and bottom was in green color. Mainly representing the red one for Hindus and green one for Muslims. So the concept of Indian Flag born with religion. But as per time Lala Hans Raj Sodhi suggested of adding snipping wheel that was crusade for M.K. Gandhi against the imperial British government for being self reliant of Indians. Gandhi Ji added while stripe in middle of the red and green stripes and added snipping wheel on white stripe.
With time the red color replaced with the deep saffron color and meaning of these colors also changed against religion to courage & sacrifices, peace & truth and chivalry & faith. Prior Gandhi Ji added white stripe thinking of different other religions in India.
So let's now come back to the curious fact about the difference between flag hoisting & flag unfurling -
On independence day we hoist flag while on republic day we unfurl flag. While hoisting flag, the flag is bound at the bottom of the flag pole and with rope the flag is taken upward for unfurling. But in republic day, while unfurling the flag, the flag is already available on the top of the pole and there is no need to take up the bound flag, only we unfurl the flag with the help of role dragging.
On Independence day India Prime Minister hoist flag at Lal Kila, New Delhi while in Republic day the President of India unfurl the Indian flag at Rajpath, New Delhi. Another interesting fact is that on 26th January our constitution of India was completely enforced and the position of President of India was created on this date; Rajendra Prasad was the first Indian President to unfurl the Indian National Flag on the occasion of Republic Day.
